Police warn of new scam

A new scam is being used by criminals to try and steal money or information from citizens in the district of Warendorf. The fraudsters write to their victims via a well-known messenger service using a foreign number. In the message, the perpetrators pretend to be relatives who have water damage and are therefore using someone else's smartphone. The perpetrators suggest that their victims need money and ask them to transfer a multi-digit amount to an account.

If you receive such messages:

• Ignore the messages and do not reply
• Take a screenshot of the message and number
• Inform the police by calling emergency number 110
